Come to think of it, we are all actually selling something in the
course of our daily life, one way or another. If we want to attain
something or achieve a certain objective, we have to find our way into
convincing other people of the desirability of our targeted outcome.
Perhaps what turns off some people is when they start getting other
people's money in return for whatever it is that they are "selling".
But if we look at it from the point that we are not just taking other
people's money but they are in fact consciously trading their cash for
something that they believe to be of value to them.
So what, then, is it that you can start "selling" to start you on your way to a profitable business?
In the last decade or so, we have all heard people say that we have
advanced from an Industrial Age to an Information Age. Knowledge has
become a valuable product and the business has shifted more and more
towards favoring the increasing valuation of intangible products over
tangible ones.
There are two ways of looking at this. One is that the Information
Age has made people aware that there are a lot of things that they
wanted to understand before that they can now easily learn. This
creates an ever-increasing market of people hungry for knowledge and
information. The advent of the Internet and the World Wide Web has
further fueled this information revolution by making the information
and knowledge more readily available to people, even from the comforts
of their own home.
The
other way of looking at it is that because of the resulting glut or
overabundance of information, it can also become overwhelming when
brought to the other extreme. This again presents another business
opportunity for those who have the knack for organizing information and
presenting them as structured knowledge. This can help eliminate a lot
of clutter and help people understand better and reach their learning
objectives easier and faster.
These are the two ways then that information products can become a viable basis for a profitable business. Find something that you have valuable knowledge of, or an area where you have know-how above the average person and convert your knowledge into an information product that you can share with others and get paid in the process. You can further boost your knowledge of the subject matter through additional research to increase your level of expertise but since you are already knowledgeable about the subject matter to start with, this would not take much investment anymore on your part.
If on the other hand you have the talent for teaching or converting existing knowledge into something that can make other people learn it easier, then you can take information about the subject matter from other sources, compile them and structure them into something that will help people learn it faster. You can even extract the expertise from other people, compile their expert knowledge into something that is easier to comprehend. You can then create a simple report from it, or create a series of training modules that will benefit your targeted customers.
The next question would then be, what specific area should you focus on? In my next article, I will discuss the concept of niches and the process of niche marketing.
